AN: This is the first fic for my answer to the Sylum100 fic challenge. :)

They never thought that they would use her as one but River is their secret weapon. In the aftermath of Blue Sun’s attempt and succession to make her deadly, the enemies who entered the house never made it past River.

 

Simon does try to make her better but River’s vampire genes don’t let any of the treatments work or take effect. Kaylee keeps River in a semi-lucid state of mind.

 

Many arguments have been held about River. She should be neutralized for her own sake and the safety of others. It never got past that point. Simon would leave the room the room, Jayne would soon follow. Mal knew that everyone meant well but River was bonded and Simon was fiercely protective of her. Then someone got hurt and Mal had to make a choice.

Mal knew this day would come. He was the leader and yet he never acted like it, until someone messed with his family. The tension had been building since River had a slight breakdown and a few people got hurt. Everyone looked to Mal to make a decision, do we send River away with Kaylee or do we handle it and let the pair be mourned. Mal didn’t like either option. He had the final choice. Yes, he did have the persuasion of one of his mates, River was Simon’s sister, but Mal had to choose what was best for his small clan. All eyes were now on Mal.

 

“They are going to stay; we’re going to try to find someone to help River. That is my decision.”
